I Hit a Bird Today
It was some sort of tit, I think. I only saw it twice and each time was a fraction of a second. The first, it was about a meter ahead just swooping into my vision. I blinked, and it was smacked into my windscreen with a gentle ‘thud’.
I gasped and so did my partner. We just carried on in silence until I let out a quiet
“oh no.”
The last time I hit anything with my car, it was a pigeon, five or so years ago.
I cried.
I guess to some people hitting a bird is inconsequential, but I still feel incredibly guilty about it. I suppose it couldn’t have been helped, the bird had its path and I had mine. It’s hard to avoid something travelling at 50mph when you’re already in the motion of crossing its path, especially when you probably can’t even comprehend what a car is.
Anyway, I’m sorry little bird. You were only trying to cross the road. I hope you didn’t suffer long. I’ve been told that I probably broke your neck and killed you instantly. As horrible as that is, I hope it’s the case.

Some of the birds I think it might have been. Left to right; Chaffinch, House Sparrow, Willow Tit.
